An invention can be in the form of a product, a process, a material or chemical composition that provides a contribution over what was already known. To obtain a patent, technical information about the invention must be disclosed to the public in the form of a patent application.
A patent is a grant by the U.S. Government to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale or importing the patented item without the patent owner’s permission. This grant creates a property right for the inventor that may be transferred, in whole or in part, to others. An Assignment transfers an ownership interest in the patent to someone else. A license grants rights to use the patent, but not to own it.
