MacMillan, Sobanski & Todd is proud to announce that Brian Pummill, an attorney in our firm, has been called to serve as a military lawyer or Judge Advocate in Afghanistan.  Brian is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.  He previously served as a combat officer in the Army Special Forces.  He will report in February to his base in an area of Afghanistan near an international border, and he expects to serve 12 months.

Brian will be advising his military commander, and Afghan army, governmental and tribal officials, on issues such as the law of war, the rules of engagement, government contract law, administrative law, labor law, international law, and claims against the government.  He will be advising individual servicemembers regarding personal civil legal problems they may have.  He will also be prosecuting and defending at military courts-martial.

Brian's family has a proud tradition of military service.  Jack Pummill, Brian's father, served as a Marine Corps officer.  His grandfather was a combat infantryman in the European Theater during World War II, earning two Purple Hearts, one in the Battle of the Bulge.  Two of his uncles served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, one as a Navy gunner's mate aboard an aircraft carrier, and the other as an Army engineer building airstrips.  His great-grandfather served in the Ohio National Guard during World War I.  Brian's daughter, Mary "Molly" Pummill, is graduating high school this year, and she has been awarded appointments to attend both the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.

At MacMillan, Sobanski & Todd, Brian's practice has included all aspects of intellectual property law in a number of technology areas including automotive, electro-mechanical devices, mechanical, and weapons systems.  We will miss Brian when he is gone, we look forward to his safe return, and we salute him for his outstanding service to the country.
